In today’s evolving industry landscape, the concept of healthcare has expanded far beyond simply treating illness. Now, forward‑thinking insurers are focused on keeping people healthy from the get‑go—and that’s where preventative and proactive care initiatives come in.
At PALIG, we’ve accepted this challenge. We have an opportunity to do more than cover our members’ healthcare costs. We can actually help protect their health before they require care, improving quality of life, reducing claims and controlling healthcare costs.
It’s a win‑win all around, which is why PALIG is deeply committed to developing and implementing innovative preventative and proactive care initiatives. Here’s what you should know.

Defining Preventative and Proactive Care

You’re already familiar with preventative care—i.e., vaccinations, screenings and routine check‑ups. Many PALIG health plans offer these benefits; you’ve undoubtedly discussed them with prospects and clients.   These services matter because they can help detect health issues early. Or better yet, prevent illness altogether!    But proactive care takes this approach even further. Proactive care programs encourage people to take deliberate actions on a regular basis to maintain their overall health. These often include:
  • Health education and lifestyle coaching
  • Healthy eating guidance and fitness support
  • Stress reduction and smoking cessation programs
  • Mental health check‑ins and digital well‑being tools
In other words, proactive care doesn’t merely nip disease in the bud—it aims to prevent it entirely by encouraging lifestyle practices proven to lower common health risks.

Tackling Chronic Diseases at the Source

According to a recent study of PALIG medical claims data, the key driver of healthcare costs in Latin America and the Caribbean has shifted from acute, infectious illnesses to chronic, long‑term diseases.
These include heart disease, diabetes and respiratory conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). While they are very serious and can in fact be fatal, they’re also largely preventable—or at the least, very manageable.
Take heart attacks. Some risks factors, such as family history, are unavoidable. However, most behavioral risk factors—unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking and alcohol use—can be improved. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, 80% of heart attacks and strokes are preventable, and some studies put that figure even higher.
If you could spare a single friend or client a potentially fatal heart attack or stroke, wouldn’t you try? At PALIG, that’s the thinking that drives our preventative and proactive care programs.

Pioneering Proactive Care Initiatives

As you know, PALIG has long embraced traditional preventative care benefits. It’s good business, and it’s the right thing to do. But now we’re also finding ways to help people live longer, healthier lives, leveraging nearly a century’s worth of claims data to shape our efforts. For example, consider these programs.
Early Breast Cancer Detection Campaigns
Over the last few years, we’ve conducted an effective mammogram campaign in multiple countries. In certain countries, this may include waiving deductibles and encouraging thousands to get screened.
Because of this program, some tumors were indeed discovered. This allowed members to receive treatment early—a process we facilitated. We intend to expand it into more countries. When it becomes available in your area, this is news you’ll certainly want to share with clients.
Chronic Conditions Pilot Programs
Our data tells us the rates of chronic diseases are rising across Latin America and the Caribbean. In response, we’re supporting members with specially developed pilot programs for common chronic conditions, including diabetes, hypertension and cancer. These pilot programs offer one‑on‑one coaching, psychological support and ongoing medical guidance to help members best manage their particular health challenge. The results to date are very promising.
Employer‑Driven Wellness Partnerships
Our employee benefits solutions give us the opportunity to reach many employees at once. As a result, we’re working directly with member employers to integrate proactive care into the workplace setting.
In our experience, employers are eager to share these programs with their workers. Not only do wellness programs boost employee well‑being, they also increase productivity and retention—while reducing claims, which helps keep premiums down.
PALIG’s Online Wellness Hub
PALIG’s online Wellness Hub—the one you’re visiting right now—gives members access to valuable personalized health content, tools and reminders, tailored to their unique health history.
It’s proactive healthcare in action, and it’s accessible  on demand at their convenience.
If you haven’t encouraged your clients to take advantage of our digital platform, now is a great time to do so. Keep in mind: we’re continually adding new data‑driven content that just may make a difference to someone’s health.

An Industry‑Wide Shift from “Sick Care” to “Well Care”

While PALIG is on the forefront of proactive care, we’re delighted to say that we’re not alone.
While the health insurance industry has long been based on a reactive model—i.e., an insured gets sick, and their health plan covers the cost of their treatment—many insurers are investing in ways to keep their members healthy from the start.    For example, our industry is increasingly focused on expanding preventative care benefits, while developing more effective chronic condition management programs.   It’s focused on leveraging technology in a variety of innovative ways, from identifying at‑risk insureds early on to conducting remote patient monitoring through telehealth platforms.   And it’s measuring success in terms that go beyond claims costs, tracking analytics such as:
  • Participation rates for preventative screenings
  • Engagement rates for wellness programs
  • Stabilization rates for those in chronic condition management programs
In short, it means treating health more like a long‑term investment and not a short‑term fix—and that’s good news across the board.

Where You Fit In

As healthcare grows ever more expensive and complex, preventative and proactive care becomes ever more important. It’s been shown to reduce hospitalizations, lessen the severity of chronic conditions and lower long‑term healthcare costs.
For PALIG agents, it’s a compelling value proposition. You’re in the position to offer your clients more than a quality health plan, but  an opportunity to better health. It’s a wellness journey that benefits everyone, and now’s a great time to start one.
